Campaign --things you can do right now to stop the proposed privatisation of water--
On
Tuesday 5 May 2010, the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill
142-1 passed its first reading in New Zealand's parliament. If passed
into law this will allow councils to privatise water.
Read the relevant section of the bill, Part 1,

We
have declared 12 June National Day of Action Against Privatisation. If
you are organising something in your area then please let us know so
others can join in.
Here's
some ideas on how you can stop privatisation of water in New Zealand. If
you're organising action we'd love to hear about it, and we're happy to
promote it. Email us the details.
1. Make
a submission
On the Bill which will mean communities lose
control of their water.
The
Bill has passed its second reading and is to be sent to Select
Committee for public submissions. We'll keep you posted on when that
happens (
join our email discussion group waterloop or check back here).
2. Call or visit your MP
Tell
them you are against Part 1, s36 of the Local Government Act 2002
Amendment Bill 142-1 which changes the way councils can manage water.Urge them to vote against the Bill.
The
Greens, Labour, the Progressive Party and the Maori Party all voted
against the Bill. Act, National and United voted for the Bill.
3. Hold a
public meeting
Organise a meeting to raise awareness, invite speakers (or speak!), and organise a protest.
4. Get
informed and stay in touch
